Kommune – a new eating place and drinking venue which is in the old Castle Gate building. At first I thought this wouldn’t work as we have a similar one at Cutlery Works at Neepsend area, but how much I was proved wrong, so lets see what’s inside and also which pubs are near to this venue.
Their website is here.
My first impression was how big and spacious it is, when you walk in you have all the food stalls to the right hand side, there are plenty to choose from, the website gives a big list of each one. I have only eaten at one of them the speciality fishmongers, with diabetic I need to be careful what I eat when out and smallish on carbs but plenty of protein.
Drinks wise you have Hop Hideout in here, if you walk down the steps and walk past the other bar Hop Hideout are round the corner. They have on 4 keg lines and the notes are on the wall so you can see what you are drinking, they are also available in 1/3rds. Also in the fridges are bottles and cans to drink inside, for me this is an ideal place as I always pass through town to get home and is ideal for a trip down to Kelham Island area.
There is another bar as well which serves keg and a couple of cask lines, I have seen Abbeydale and Neepsend brewery served.
There is also a viewing room showing art and other various things.
Seating wise there is plenty of room, vast amount of tables and chairs, each with a table number so you go order your food and it comes to you. Great idea. You could get in more tables with loads of empty space.
Kommune is near a tram stop, you need to get off at Castle Square
Now for pubs which are close to this area you might want to visit :
Dove and Rainbow – just under the bridge from Argos you come across this pub, been in the social media news recently as the pubco wanted to change it but that’s not happening for the moment, serving a good 6 cask lines, its is a no nonsense rock bar, pool table is available.
Other pubs near are:
- Bankers Draft (Weatherspoons pub)
- Cavells (not been in for ages)
Other pubs with a bit more walking distance:
- Dog and Partridge
- Church House
- Roebuck Tavern
- Old Queens Head
You can also go from Hop Hideout to Shakespeare pub and start a Kelham Island pub crawl.
